Moonglow Gardens in 2022

Hello!

We are a small artisanal seed-production farm growing heirloom & open-pollinated seeds on the Canadian Prairies in Sturgeon County, Alberta (Zone 3). Our seeds are non-certified organic, non-treated, and non-GMO.

We acknowledge that we are on Treaty 6 territory, the traditional homelands of Alexander First Nations & Michel First Nations, as well as the Metis Nation of Alberta's Districts 8 and 11. We love and cherish this place we call home and strive to live in reciprocity with the land that sustains us.

All of our seeds are lovingly produced here on our seed farm in Alberta using regenerative growing methods like focusing on fostering a healthy soil food web, and encouraging a diverse and healthy ecosystem within our seed production spaces.

From planting trays of seeds in early spring to hand-harvesting and hand-packaging seeds in the fall, everything is done here by us in Sturgeon County, Alberta. We do not outsource any seeds from other growers or growing zones, so you can be sure our seeds are regionally-adapted to the Canadian climate.

While we are not certified organic, we always follow organic growing practices. We do not use harmful herbicides. pesticides, or fertilizers- and instead rely on organic and regenerative agriculture practices.

We are passionate about seed saving, pollinator preservation, regionally-adapted seeds, seed sovereignty, and preserving food biodiversity.

Moonglow Seed Co is proud to be woman-owned and is a 2SLGBTQIA+ friendly business.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at moonglowgardens@shaw.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question

Yes, most likely! We restock items often. Sometimes microdwarf and dwarf tomato seeds can sell out very quickly.

We hand processes and package all of our seeds and work in small batches. As we package up seeds we list them on our website. Some of our rarer seeds (dwarf and microdwarf tomatoes) can sell out fairly quick so check back often or sign up for our newsletter below.

The majority of Canadian seed companies out-source their seeds from countries with growing conditions completely different than Canadian gardens. We are proud to grow all of our seeds ourselves in Sturgeon County, Alberta. From seed trays in early spring to hand packaging seeds in late fall, we lovingly tend to our seed crops every step on the way.

It can be hard to tell which seed companies outsource their seeds. Being Canadian-owned does not necessarily mean the seeds are from Canada. Look for words like "Produced in Canada" or "Grown in Canada." If you are unsure, you may have to reach out to the seed company to ask.

Yes! We do NOT edit or alter any of our photos on our website or social media pages, aside from cropping. Photos are taken at different times of the day with different lighting. Heirloom tomatoes, peppers, and veggies really are that beautiful and vibrant!

Today, most large seed companies out-source their seeds via contracts, and rely on other farmers and growers to grow their seed crops. Often, those seeds are produced in another country with a climate very different from the one you are growing in. When you shop local seed companies that produce their own seeds, you are buying regionally-adapted seeds fit for your growing area. This is becoming more and more important with climate change.

Another difference is that small seed companies harvest, clean, and package up seeds mostly by hand. Larger companies can afford extremely expensive machines to do the work for them at a very rapid pace, therefor driving costs down.

When you purchase your seeds from a small farm, the seeds are lovingly cared for every single step of the way by the same hands. We KNOW our seeds are grown regeneratively, because we do it ourselves in our very own production field.

Because we clean all of our seeds manually and encourage beneficial insects to our gardens, sometimes you may find a little bit of chaff or perhaps even a small bug part, such as a leg, in with your seeds. This is organic and will not affect the germination of your seeds at all. Small seeds such as lettuce, verbena, yarrow, and rudbeckia are notorious for being difficult to clean without machines

We are so glad you asked! We are currently working on a digital seed saving guide. To get started on saving your own seeds, see here

We offer a true-to-type guarantee as we grow varieties according to isolation recommendations, and/or use pollination-preventing barriers. Crossbreeding or open-pollination projects do not carry a true-to-type guarantee. Listings will state if they are not covered under the true-to-type guarantee. If your seeds do not grow true-to-type, please reach out to us at moonglowgardens@shaw.ca

As germination success is largely user-based with many complex factors, at this time we do not offer a germination guarantee. That being said, we conduct germination tests on all of our seeds after harvesting, and then periodically conduct tests on samples afterwards.

If you are having trouble germinating our seeds, we would love to help troubleshoot! Please send us an email at moonglowgardens@shaw.ca describing the following: date of sowing, depth of sowing, type of soil or medium used, temperature during the daytime & night, light source or grow light type, watering schedule, were any fertilizers used?

We also have a tomato grow guide here that includes some tips on germinating tomato seeds.

This Pledge is intended to ensure the four essential seed freedoms:

  1. The freedom to save or grow seed for replanting or for any other purpose.
  2. The freedom to share, trade, or sell seed to others.
  3. The freedom to trial and study seed and to share or publish information about it.
  4. The freedom to select or adapt the seed, make crosses with it, or use it to breed new lines and varieties.

We LOVE to share seeds with our community and local seed libraries, public libraries, classrooms, community gardens, etc

You can currently find our seeds at the Stanley Milner Edmonton Public Library, The Calgary Seed Library, The Morinville Public Library, and many local seed swaps hosted by locals in various communities across Canada.
