Winter Squash

Winter Squash

Zones: Annual to zone 2

Pollination: Insects. Cross-pollination commonly occurs between other pumpkin varieties, as well as with winter squash, zucchini, cucumbers, and watermelons. Plants produce both male and female flowers. Bees are very proficient at moving pollen between flowers. Bagging and hand-pollinating is used when growing more than one variety.

Isolation Distance: 400-1500 meters

Propagation: By seeds

Seed Starting: Direct sow outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Alternatively you can sow indoors in peat pots 4 weeks before last frost and transplant out no later than once the plant has two sets of true leaves. Sow 1" deep. Germination occurs in 5-10 days at 21C or above.

Seed Viability: 3-10 years

Minimum Plants for Seed Saving: 6-20

Seed Saving Level: Intermediate
