LATEST NEWS
The library is now open for Members! Members can choose up to TWO varieties to steward for the 2025 growing season. APPLY HERE
If you have adopted seeds from TNSL at any time in the past, you are considered a member. You do not have to re-apply to be a member every year. Members are active regardless if they return seeds to the library or not, and remain active until the member decides to cancel their membership or opt-out. If you would like to cancel your membership or opt-out, please send us an e-mail at seedlibrary@shaw.ca
The library will open to new members on October 1, 2024 at 9AM MST. A new member is someone who has never stewarded seeds with us in the past. New members joining us for the first time can choose ONE variety to steward.
The complete list of varieties that we steward is now digital! We currently house 130+ varieties and 110 of those will be available for members to adopt for the 2025 growing season!
We will be releasing a quarterly newsletter going forward. Find our first volume in the link at the bottom of this page.
Be sure to add seedlibrary@shaw.ca to your safe senders list to receive our newsletter (and other important information) from us via e-mail.

If you had no luck saving the variety you adopted last year, no worries! It happens and we are so thankful that you dedicated the space & time to steward seeds. If you can, please let us know the status of your seed return so we can notify members who may be waiting to check out that variety next. If you feel up for trying again let us know. If you want to try something new this year, we are reopening on September 1, 2024

DONATIONS
We are so grateful to all the members who have made seed donations to the library. The seed library would not be possible without you! If you are interested in sending in any old unwanted packages of seeds or seeds self-harvested from your own garden, please reach out to us at seedlibrary@shaw.ca or send seeds to the address above
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We are currently looking for volunteers to check and reply to emails, write newsletters, Instagram posts, seed saving guides, and blog posts for the Northern Seed Library. We are also looking for Edmonton or Sturgeon County area members to help us fill seed requests this fall in person. Email us at seedlibrary@shaw.ca if you are interested in volunteering, or if you would like more information
Almost all seeds can be sent as standard lettermail with Canada Post for $1-$2, depending on the size and quantity of the seeds. If you are sending a lot of seeds, larger seeds, it may cost you up to $5 per envelope.
If you are sending small seeds like tomato seeds, you will only need one regular lettermail stamp. If you are sending larger seeds like beans or peas, you may need one oversize lettermail stamp.
Seeds are very light. For example, 10-25 tomato seeds in an envelope weighs around 2g-3g. You would have to send A LOT of tomato (or other small seeds) to exceed 30g. An envelope of 20-25 beans weighs on average 20g-25g. This is still under 30g, but remember to take into consideration the weight of the mailing envelope, or any other contents in the envelope.
Small envelopes weigh on average 3g-6g
Large envelopes weigh on average 4g-8g
Bubble mailers will weigh more. Small poly mailers are usually 10g-40g, while paper-based bubble mailers are heavier at 20g-100g
Regular Lettermail (3g to 50g)
Up to 30g - $0.99 to $1.15
Up to 50g - $1.40
*Permanent stamps can be purchased for as low as 99 cents if purchased in a booklet of 10 at the post office
Oversize Lettermail (5g - 500g)
Up to 100g - $2.09
Up to 200g - $3.43
Up to 300g - $4.78
500g+ see here
If you are sending a large volume of seeds or lots of beans/peas, a flat rate box will be your best choice. These can be purchased from the post office.
Please keep in mind that these prices may not reflect all price changes implemented by Canada Post, and that seed and envelope weights are just estimates and can vary greatly.
